Political candidates have tried a lot of stunts to push opponents into agreeing to debates, but the hunger strikes by Ray Lutz and Michael Benoit definitely raise the bar.

It's doubtful they'll succeed in coaxing Rep. Duncan Hunter into the series of debates they want in the 52nd Congressional district race. Hunter's camp is agreeing to a single Oct. 15 face-off. Lutz and Benoit figure to be pretty hungry by then.

The strike is sure attracting attention. Why not? Losing 12 pounds in one week, as Lutz did? The world will soon beat a path to his door.

Water, diluted apple juice and vitamins. Too bad. Apple juice doesn't agree with me. ...

Of course, in the 52nd district, Lutz and Benoit could debate Hunter 24 hours a day till Nov. 2 and still lose big-time. Such are the demographics of the district. ...
