Hungry for Publicity

Getting publicity when you're not the political incumbent is difficult [understatement.] Well, Ray Lutz, 53, solved that problem in an innovative way. This California Democratic Congressional candidate went on a hunger strike. The immediate objective, so he contended, was to get his GOP opponent incumbent Duncan Hunter to commit to a debate. Well, he got that and more.

Today, after 11 days, Lutz ended his hunger strike. Hunter had agreed to debate him on October 15th. Much more importantly, during the process Lutz received quality national publicity. That has included coverage by the influential POLITICO. There's more.

Now, Lutz can leverage this 11-day ordeal as concrete evidence of his willing to go the distance for a principle. Who knows, voters might buy that.
