Dear Progressive Friends,

After extensive research, interviews and meetings with all of our candidates, I am very pleased to announce my endorsement of Derek Casady for the 52nd Congressional district.

This was a difficult choice, because all five Democrats on the ballot have progressive views and are excellent public speakers. However, one candidate stands out from the crowd because of his extensive experience, wisdom, demonstrated party loyalty, strong ties to our community, and unwavering ethical integrity.

As a former reporter and editor of a newspaper that later became the East County Californian, Derek has covered our communities’ council hearings, school boards, police, fire, and other entities. He knows East County issues like the back of his hand, cares about the people in our neighborhoods, and has developed thoughtful, in-depth positions on all of the important issues. He has also served as an editor for the Los Angeles Times.

A former Naval officer, Derek commanded 30 men and witnessed an atomic explosion that impressed upon him the terrible destructive power of such weapons. A dedicated peace activist who has been speaking out at peace demonstrations even before public opinion swung against the war, Derek supports withdrawal of our troops from Iraq.

He is a man of courage and conviction. Last year, Derek pushed a resolution that I authored through the County Democratic Central Committee, where he is a member. That measure called for the impeachment of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. Derek argued passionately and won passage for the resolution, winning over skeptics in the party leadership who had urged me to drop the measure. He showed similar strength of character by introducing a resolution to eliminate the military’s discriminatory don’t ask, don’t tell policy.

Owner of a health food grocery store, Derek is a staunch environmentalist
