  • There are two groups meeting which are forks from the original OSD.
  • Freedom Plaza had a good turnout at the recent GA on Saturday, 47 people, a bit increase from last weeks 8-10 people.
  • Childrens Park has had a consistently larger group of about 40 people or more.
  • This email blast does not play favorites and will try to provide information on both forks, and other non OSD events too.

Occupy Walk I went with Stephen Frank G out to Pauma valley to see the walkers yesterday, at Susan's wonderful home. They took off this morning from the 76 & 15 and easily made it to Temecula this afternoon where Sharon and her husband picked them up to host the walkers at their house. Next big stop: Hemet. We are in need of a host family in Hemet.

  • Contacted by KPFA -- They want to run our livestream along with many other protests happening on March 11 regarding the Fukushima disaster.
  • NEW Women from Fukushima have been confirmed for this event. This will make it extremely newsworthy -- you don't get visitors from Japan to tell their story very often.
  • Have ordered more flyers and 100 posters. Will need help distributing these to coffee shops, college campuses, gathering places, etc.

Legal Hearings, etc.
  • Adriane says: Curtis Williams, aka Hex, is facing trial starting Monday, February 27, and trial is expected to last until Wednesday or Thursday. Hex was arrested during the Port Shutdown protest for crossing the street and faces a misdemeanor charge of Penal Code 148, resisting arrest or delaying/obstructing a peace officer. Hex wants the support of his fellow occupiers and media attention on his trial. This is sure to be an exciting show; Hex's attorney will be exposing police lies and presenting evidence of innocence, including exonerating video of the arrest and eyewitness testimony of fellow occupiers. Please, if even for only an hour this week, come occupy the court in support of a committed member of this movement, and stand against the continuous civil rights violations of San Diego law enforcement and the City Attorney's persecution of an innocent man.

    Trial call is at 9 a.m. in Dept. 2, where the case will be sent out to a trial department. Jury selection will likely start all morning (no room for the public while the jury panel is in the courtroom). Opening statements by both attorneys will likely start in the afternoon session, which starts at 1:30pm. When you get to court, ask the bailiff in Dept. 2 where the Williams case (with attorney Laura Sheppard) was sent, or check the Facebook event for updates and to RSVP. The downtown criminal courthouse is located at 220 W. Broadway.
  • Benjamin Gasper's trial has been postponed to allow the defense to respond to new evidence brought forth by the prosecution. The newest court date is March 19th at 9:30 in department 50.
  • Mayor to get new contract-making power: See the article, a small paragraph near the bottom. City council voting this week to give Sanders more contract making power. What about the next mayor? Anybody want a new stadium (or a new stadium sign)? Article
    • Makes you wonder if this is the way the City Council holds the Mayor's feet to the fire. Don't question his authority and the fact that he violated the law, just grant more power and leave them out of it, that must be what they are thinking.
    • It also means developers get their way with little or no citizen review. We must stand against these changes!

  • How Occupy helped labor win on the West Coast Earlier this month longshore workers in Washington state reached a contract with a boss that has spent the past year fighting to keep their union out. That company, the multinational EGT, sought to run its new grain terminal in the town of Longview, as the only facility on the West Coast without the famously militant International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). A victory by EGT would have emboldened employers up and down the coast to seek to free themselves of ILWU influence. And if the union — with the help of the Occupy movement — had not defied the law, EGT would have succeeded.

  • Obama Campaign To Wall Street: We'll Go Easy On You Guys President Obama's campaign manager has a message for Wall Street: This time around, we'll lay off. Jim Messina, Obama's campaign manager, told the hosts of a $38,500 per-plate fundraiser geared towards investment bankers and hedge fund managers that the president wouldn't make Wall Street look bad during his re-election campaign, Bloomberg reports. The assurance follows Obama's call to raise taxes on the rich in his latest budget proposal.

  • Philadelphia Convention Plans Lead To Rift In Occupy Movement In early November, Nathan Kleinman, an Occupy protester in Philadelphia, received an email from someone named Michael Pollok who said he was part of a group of protesters affiliated with the Occupy movement. Pollok said the group planned to hold a convention in Philadelphia during the week of July 4, when 876 delegates from congressional districts around the country would draft "a petition for a redress of grievances" to be presented to Congress.
    Kleinman didn't like the idea, and he didn't think it would go over well with other people at Occupy Philly either. He had a few specific concerns, chief among them the fact that the event involved a representative model of government, as opposed to the consensus model that has characterized the Occupy movement from the beginning.

Buckle Up, Chief Justice Roberts On Friday night, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the Montana Supreme Court's December, 2011 decision upholding the state's century-old ban on corporate political spending. The implications of this are huge, as it paves the way for a potential re-opening of the disastrous Citizens United decision that has spawned billionaire-sponsored super PACs. And if that happens, Chief Justice John Roberts better buckle up for a grassroots mobilization unlike any the court has seen in years.

Just got news that Shahrokh's brother passed away from a heart attack. Shahrokh has been with Occupy SD from before the start. And even though he doesn't have Facebook he really does exist. He could use condolences and support today from those that know him. Sounds like he'll be heading up to San Jose soon though plans are up in the air. Spinach Williams, Cynthia Tecson and I just met his twin brother and mother in San Jose just a few weeks ago.
