UCSD Occupation of Chancellor's office

Mar 1 Rally at UCSD

Occupy Walk: Day 15 was a long steep climb from Gilman Hot Springs to Beaumont California.

M11_San_Onofre_Flier-1up-fmclip.png Details: M 11 San Onofre Protest And Rally

San Diego City Council -- Attempting to give themselves raises!
  • The docket says: "For Fiscal Year 2013, the Salary Setting Commission recommends salaries of $175,000 for City Councilmembers and $235,000 for the Mayor, to be effective July 1, 2012."
  • MEETING IS MONDAY AT 2 PM. We should go and tell them how worthless the city council is, in that it is the worst in the state in terms of public participation. They did a review of salaries, how about a review of public participation rules? Not done, of course.
  • They put dirty deeds like this on Monday because there is no public comment on that day, and therefore less public scrutiny. Lesson: Keep a close eye on the Monday docket because that is when they always are going to sneak this sort of thing in.
  • Of course, these salaries are RIDICULOUS, but they are not that unusual, unfortunately, when you look at various cities around. El Cajon city manager makes something like $250K. The RETIRED city manager in El Cajon makes $265K a year. That's $23,000 a month... What does a retiree do with all that money? These retirement salaries should be capped at $100K, period. They never compare with the private sector, but instead always compare with other public sector workers, and then make the claim that they need to pay more to get more capable people in. But will higher salaries do it? I really don't think making the salary higher is going to give Demaio the boot and get someone else instead.
  • This is an agenda item so everyone can speak for 3 minutes -- let's show them that if they put crap like this on the agenda, they will have to endure being slapped silly for hours on end.
  • BE THERE -- 2 PM MONDAY!!

Forging a Sustainable Future Symposium (UnitedGreen.org)
  • Keynote Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is truly a great speaker. I understand his fee was $20K for this speech.
  • Recorded in HD -- Watch it here: (2 parts) http://www.copswiki.org/Common/M1244

Occupy Walk

San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS)
  • Event has been endorsed by the SD Sierra Club ConsCom.
  • Press Release on M11 San Onofre Protest sent to media and all lists Monday, Feb 20.
  • A woman and a man from Fukushima have been confirmed for this event. This will make it extremely newsworthy -- you don't get visitors from Japan to tell their story very often (costing organizers over $3000)
  • Mimi Kennedy, supporting actress in Academy Award nominee "Midnight in Paris" will be keynoting.
  • Met with San Onofre State Park rangers and SONGS security. Rally site will be about 1/4 mile from the secure area of the plant, but it will be in full view. Rangers and security officers were very cooperative and helpful so far.
  • First bus is full. PLEASE SIGN UP NOW TO FILL A SECOND BUS!

Legal Hearings, etc.
  • Curtis Williams, aka Hex -- Jury said: Not guilty for blocking traffic and mistrial for delaying police officer! YEA! We win!! But, only half way...
    • Adriane Bracciale says: -- PLEASE contact Curtis Williams's lawyer Laura Sheppard if you saw Curtis Williams get arrested: lrsheppardlaw@gmail.com. His trial resulted in a hung jury, 9:3 Guilty:NG, and the City Attorney gets another chance to try for a conviction with a new trial. The jury was not swayed by his defense witnesses because no one saw the moments leading up to the arrest or the initial detention itself.
  • Benjamin Gasper's trial has been postponed to allow the defense to respond to new evidence brought forth by the prosecution. The newest court date is March 19th at 9:30 in department 50.
  • Fish's trial will be on March 22nd.
  • Bobby Uribe's trial starts 4/19. Need witnesses to Bobby Uribe's arrest at port protest.

  • 'Warehouse Wage Slave' in the USA How many of us actually know what it takes to get products to us, what kind of labor practices go on at the shipping centers right here at home, in the US. Currently there are a number of lawsuits, one in particular against Amazon, where workers have complained of horrible conditions and being treated like "pieces of crap". Mother Jones' Mac Mc Clelland went to find out for herself by working at Amalgamated Product Giant Shipping Worldwide in Mississippi. She joins the show to explain what it was really like.

POLICE COMPLAINTS

Have you been mistreated by the Police? Have your First Amendment rights been violated? Have you been arrested for nothing, only to have the charges "unfiled" but held over your head for up to a year?
  • NEW First read this document: http://www.2momslaw.com/police_misconduct.pdf
  • Make a Complaint: How to Make a Police Complaint
    • Use this form: Complaint Form
    • Forms also available in the lobby of City Hall.
    • Citizen's Review Board member says we do NOT need names & badge numbers. File the complaint & it's up to SDPD to determine who the officer was (But it is better if we have them, of course).
  • ALSO: By telephone or in writing to
    • SDPD Internal Affairs Unit, 1401 Broadway, MS 709, San Diego CA 92101, (619) 531-2801
    • Complaints made to the Citizens Review Board do not necessarily make it into the officers' personnel files
    • Read this: Making Police Compliants That Stick
  • Also, consider making a CLAIM against the city for your BOND money if charges were never filed. They have 45 days to reject the claim, then you file a lawsuit. It costs $400 to file unless you can claim low income.

  • NEW TELL POLICE HOW THEY ARE DOING: Police host monthly meetings in the community to get feedback from community members.

What you say and do can hurt you in court -- This is what I advise my clients to say when confronted by a law enforcement officer: "Officer, please understand I refuse to talk with you until I consult with my attorney. I also refuse to consent to any search of these premises or any other premises under my control, or in which I have a possessory, proprietary, or privacy interest, including my car, my body, or effects. I hereby demand to immediately be allowed the reasonable opportunity to obtain the advice of my attorney by telephone. from: http://layon.net/busted.php
  • To check if someone is in jail check this website: http://apps.sdsheriff.net/wij/wij.aspx
    • It usually takes about 6 hours for someone who has been arrested to pop up here. This site will tell you their charges, bail, etc. Jail's number is (619) 615-2700. The jail won't tell you much if anything that is not on the website. Please check this website before saying someone is in or out of jail to avoid confusion.
