Most El Cajon residents probably know that Councilman Bob Mc Clellan sells cars. But Mc Clellan's car dealership is also a vehicle for Mc Clellan to share his Christian faith.

The four-term councilman has offered “a special price” on new and used cars to clergy in San Diego County for more than a decade. For about half that time, Mc Clellan has included all Christians.

“Since the project has been so well received and praised, I decided it was only fair and proper to extend the offer to my friends in the remainder of the Christian Community as a way of showing my thankfulness for their love and devotion to our Lord and Savior,” states an ad that ran in the El Cajon-based Christian Examiner.

It does not reference Mc Clellan's job as a city politician. Nor does it say what the “special price” is. Mc Clellan said it depends on the type of vehicle purchased.

The deal is advertised in Christian newspapers, Mc Clellan said, but the advertisements are more about outreach than selling cars. That's why he always lists his home phone number along with his work number.

Mc Clellan, who often gives presentations at churches and to civic organizations on the history of Christianity in America, said he'd probably offer the same sale price to anyone looking to buy one of his Buicks, Pontiacs or GMC trucks.

“I imagine the people calling me are Christians,” Mc Clellan said, “but if they weren't a Christian and they called I'd probably do the same thing.”
