GUESTS: Sierra Club Borderlands Team and Jim Peugh, Conservation Chair of San Diego Audubon Society, who can attest first hand to the damage that local tactical infrastructure has done to wildlife.

Join us in exploring the interconnection of social and environmental issues and controversies surrounding the recently constructed U.S./México border wall.

Although the damage has already been done along our southern border, Congress is set to vote on HR 1505 https://secure.sierraclub.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=6457 in the next few weeks. If passed, this legislation would waive over 30 federal protection laws on all public and Tribal lands within 100 miles of the Canadian and Mexican borders. Customs and Border Protection would have the authority to build roads in wilderness areas, a fence through Glacier NP, or a sub-station in Joshua Tree.

ABOUT THE FILMS:

Wild vs. Wall (20 min) Sierra Club’s film produced by Tucson filmmaker Steev Hise, is an overview of the environmental effects of current border policies, including insightful interviews and impressive footage demonstrating the long-term ecological effects of border infrastructure.

The Fence (30 min) Award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy’s HBO documentary features candid interviews with Border Patrol agents, ranchers, environmentalists and voices from both sides of the border security debate. Kennedy uses humor to highlight contradictions and politically-driven misinformation, as well as the ineffectiveness and costliness of the controversial border barrier.

Fencing the Border and its Birds (7 min) Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s gives an inside perspective on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s concerns about the wall's possible effects on wildlife and protected refuges in south Texas.
