M11_San_Onofre_Flier-1up-fmclip.png Details: M 11 San Onofre Protest And Rally

California Democratic Convention
  • In San Diego this year, about 2500 delegates from around the state and many elected officials.
  • Today is the plenary session which runs until about 2pm. Main decisions are positions on propositions and endorsements esp. in seats with two Democrats competing.
  • Lori Saldana vs. Scott Peters: Lori Saldana missed being endorsed by the party by one vote. Therefore, there is no endorsement. (It takes 60% of the delegates in the region to be endorsed).
  • Progressive Caucus Speaker: Cenk Uygur of "The Young Turks" was a very interesting talk.
    • Liberals were not always "weak"
      • Nader Raiders even got Nixon to form the EPA
    • Country is largely liberal, progressive, and way center of left in all polls.
    • Recounted the various supreme court cases that ruled that money==speech, and corporations have rights.
    • We have lost our representative govt because the elected representatives get their money from the lobbyists.
    • "If you hope that Democratic leaders will help you -- they're not even on your side" (they report to the corporations/lobbyists)
    • Cenk believes that a constitutional amendment is necessary:
      1. Corporations are not people, and they have no constitutional rights at all.
      2. Public financing of ALL elections
    • A constitutional convention is necessary because the system is too far gone. This amendment will never get through.
      • The states can force a convention and work around the current officials.
      • Will have to sell this state by state, I think 3/4 are needed.
    • Conservatives will largely help because they hate their elected officials too.
    • Wolf-pack.com
    • During his talk about 50 Armenians stood around the room with their backs to Cenk in protest to the idea that he does not acknowledge the Armenian genocide by Turkey in 1915 or so. They say the term "Young Turks" represents the three rulers responsible for the genocide and the term "wolf pack" also relates to the gray wolves, a group that has historical significance.
    • I blew it and did not record his talk, I hope the video is available.

San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS)
  • $680 million spent on this nuclear plant only 18 months ago, and heat transfer tubes are already wearing out -- they are designed to fail but usually last perhaps 10 years.
  • We still don't know the full extent of the failure because the authorities, and all Main-stream media do not tell the truth. MSNBC is owned by GE and CBS is largely owned by Westinghouse, and those two companies both make $$ from selling nuclear plant hardware.
  • Large event at the nuclear reactor site is planned for the one year anniversary of the Fukushima disaster -- still in complete uncontrolled meltdown -- on March 11. See the flier.
  • Note: not yet endorsed by OSD but seeking endorsement!

Media

2012 Feb 12

Media: Occupy San Diego

  • Occupy protesters target California Democrats Mike Oren of Los Angeles said he was among 34 people who traveled on a bus from Southern California to the convention Saturday morning. "We're here to protest the National Defense Authorization Act," he said.

  • Occupy San Diego InterOccupy Conference – Morning Update On Saturday morning as planned at 8:30am, protesters with Occupy San Diego began to assemble at Civic Center Plaza on 3rd and B for the all day Inter Occupy conference. The first couple hours at the plaza were filled with sign making, passing out welcome packets which contained information about the day’s events, and getting to know the protesters who came down to Occupy San Diego from other cities and states for the day. By the time 10am came around, the protesters were armed with signs, banners, lots of energy, and over a dozen soap boxes. At 10:20 they took to the streets. Over fifty people formed three single files lines at the Plaza and marched south on B street, zigzagging through the Gaslamp district.

Media: Occupy National and Global

  • Occupy Movement Regroups, Preparing for Its Next Phase The ragtag Occupy Wall Street encampments that sprang up in scores of cities last fall, thrusting “We are the 99 percent” into the vernacular, have largely been dismantled, with a new wave of crackdowns and evictions in the past week.
Far from dissipating, groups around the country say they are preparing for a new phase of larger marches and strikes this spring that they hope will rebuild momentum and cast an even brighter glare on inequality and corporate greed

Ray Lutz
I spent much of the day at the Democratic State Convention today. On Friday, they start with caucus meetings, which are separate groups focused on a specific issue. These meetings are open to the public and they have a nominal fee to join and vote at the meeting.

When it is election season, almost all of the meetings are filled with candidates giving short speeches. I went to the Environmental Caucus and the Internet and Computer caucus, and then the Darrell Steinbrenner Hospitality suite for dessert.

Tomorrow, my main interest is the Progressive Caucus, which meets from 8-10pm. It is the group that is most similar to the Occupy movement. Most people are very positive when I say I have participated with Occupy San Diego, but some write it off as a "wing nut" group.

I like to have a reason to meet and talk to people when I am here, otherwise, I feel like I am wasting my time. This time, I am promoting the March 11 San Onofre Event (was very appropriate at the Environmental Caucus) and progressive radio, http://www.AirProgressive.org

ANNOUNCEMENTS

See All Occupy San Diego Announcements to read all previous announcements about
  • Where we meet, how to recover confiscated property from the San Diego Police Department, information for people were arrested, etc.

POLICE COMPLAINTS

Have you been mistreated by the Police? Have your First Amendment rights been violated? Have you been arrested for nothing, only to have the charges "unfiled" but held over your head for up to a year?
  • NEW First read this document: http://www.2momslaw.com/police_misconduct.pdf
  • Make a Complaint: How to Make a Police Complaint
    • Use this form: Complaint Form
    • Forms also available in the lobby of City Hall.
    • Citizen's Review Board member says we do NOT need names & badge numbers. File the complaint & it's up to SDPD to determine who the officer was (But it is better if we have them, of course).
  • ALSO: By telephone or in writing to
    • SDPD Internal Affairs Unit, 1401 Broadway, MS 709, San Diego CA 92101, (619) 531-2801
    • Complaints made to the Citizens Review Board do not necessarily make it into the officers' personnel files
    • Read this: Making Police Compliants That Stick
  • Also, consider making a CLAIM against the city for your BOND money if charges were never filed. They have 45 days to reject the claim, then you file a lawsuit. It costs $400 to file unless you can claim low income.

Call for Witnesses:
Two occupiers are facing trial for criminal charges stemming from arrests at the Port Shut-down on December 12. Attorneys for Curtis Williams (aka Hex) and Bobby Uribe are looking for defense witnesses to dispute officer testimony and any photo or video footage of the arrests. If you witnessed Curtis's arrest, please contact attorney Laura Sheppard at lrsheppardlaw@gmail.com. If you witnessed Bobby's arrest, please contact attorney Adriane Bracciale at criminalandtrafficdefense@gmail.com.

  • Making Police Compliants That Stick -- Important info from Adriane of NLG
  • Anyone with information about arrests... Please, we need to continue to compile a complete list.
    • IF YOU HAVE BEEN ARRESTED, DETAINED, OR CITED... Please complete the form here: Occupy Legal Info Request and email to raylutz@citizensoversight.org.
    • If you can help compile the database from incoming emails, please let me know. It just takes a person who can carefully enter the data in to a web-based form.
  • Arrests At Balboa Theater 2012 Jan 11 -- This topic created to track arrests and progress fighting felony arrests at Balboa Theater
  • UPDATED Two items relevant to OSD mission were placed on the agenda of the City of San Diego Rules Committee. This committee is yet another example of a "do-nothing" committee because they hardly even treated the proposals as serious.

  • NEW TELL POLICE HOW THEY ARE DOING: Police host monthly meetings in the community to get feedback from community members.

  • Legal is asking: If you were at the South gate on the day of The Port Shut Down 12/12 and witnessed any of the arrests and are willing to testify...please contact HiAndrea on FB or haz_el_eyes@yahoo.com -- Tammy.

  • This is a VERY IMPORTANT project because we will directly engage wall street firms who own and operate the Civic Center Plaza office building.

  • What to say to cops if you're busted. What you say and do can hurt you in court -- This is what I advise my clients to say when confronted by a law enforcement officer: "Officer, please understand I refuse to talk with you until I consult with my attorney. I also refuse to consent to any search of these premises or any other premises under my control, or in which I have a possessory, proprietary, or privacy interest, including my car, my body, or effects. I hereby demand to immediately be allowed the reasonable opportunity to obtain the advice of my attorney by telephone. from: http://layon.net/busted.php
  • To check if someone is in jail check this website: http://apps.sdsheriff.net/wij/wij.aspx
    • It usually takes about 6 hours for someone who has been arrested to pop up here. This site will tell you their charges, bail, etc. Jail's number is (619) 615-2700. The jail won't tell you much if anything that is not on the website. Please check this website before saying someone is in or out of jail to avoid confusion.
  • FYI -- Penal Code 849.5. In any case in which a person is arrested and released and no accusatory pleading is filed charging him with an offense, any record of arrest of the person shall include a record of release. Thereafter, the arrest shall not be deemed an arrest, but a detention only.
