UPCOMING EVENTS
But mark your calendars now for these!
- For a complete listing of TPP events for those of you on Facebook, check back here for updates. It's very thorough and well done with all the links to the individual events pages. For those of you who are not, here is the contents of the page as of the afternoon of June 28th:
From July 2 to July 10, the political leaders of the Pacific Rim nations are meeting in San Diego to turn the Pacific Ocean and its peoples into a giant privatized corporate lake characterized by non-union workers, Wal-Mart supply chain feeders, poisoned, landless agricultural laborers, a dying biodiversity, and rising, drowning sea levels. We cannot and will not let this happen.
The Coalition to STOP TPP has been working alongside Global Trade Watch to put plan out several events taking place throughout the week, leading to a march on July 7 as part of a Global Day of Action against the TPP.

National Days of Action on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
July 1 – 7, 2012
Share info about your local action by clicking here
Trade negotiators and corporate lobbyists from throughout the Pacific Rim will be meeting in San Diego over the week of July 4th for a closed-doors trade summit aimed at rushing the secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) towards completion. U.S. negotiators have granted approximately 600 corporate lobbyists access to the TPP texts, but have refused to tell the public what they are proposing in our names. We need to drag the TPP out of the shadows if we’re going to prevent a major corporate power grab.
A Call to Action
While labor, environmental, consumer, immigrant rights, family farm and Occupy activists demonstrate in San Diego, you can help join in calling out the TPP’s back-room deal making by taking the following action:
Step 1: Identify local branch one of the TPP’s “cleared corporate advisors.” Popular choices include Wal-Mart, Chevron, Halliburton, Fed Ex, Verizon, Cargill and Caterpillar.
Step 2: Get a group of people together to visit that office or store at a specific date and time between Sunday, July 1 and Saturday, July 7. It doesn’t matter if it’s just you and a friend; a contingent from your Central Labor Council; or an entire Occupy chapter. The key to success is simply having people participate in as many different places as possible. If you’d like to spread the word about your action, and potentially have others join you, please post information about your visit here by Thursday, June 28 and we will list it on this website and circulate it via email.
Step 3: Make one or more signs that say the following: “USTR: NO BACK ROOM DEALS FOR THE 1%!” Have your group take pictures with that sign during your visit (trying to capture the corporation in the background). Email the best photos to tppaction@citizenstrade.org by Saturday, July 7 and we’ll include them in a collage delivered to trade negotiators during a creative action in the final days of the San Diego negotiations.
Step 4: When at your action, you can also choose deliver this letter; hand out this flyer to passerby; use these talking points to hold a rally; draw connections between the TPP and local struggles; or do anything else that inspires you and your friends. But please be sure to follow Step 3 to ensure that trade negotiators feel the heat from your action!
.
Together, we can help prevent a “NAFTA of the Pacific” that hurts working people, family farmers and the environment in our communities and around the world. Thank you for heeding this call to action! If you have any questions, please email tppaction@citizenstrade.org.
.
Background: What is the TPP?
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is poised to become the largest free trade agreement ever. The massive trade and investment pact is currently being negotiated behind-closed-doors between the United States and countries throughout the Pacific Rim. Current negotiating countries include the United States, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam, but the TPP is also intended as a “docking agreement” that all Pacific Rim nations will join over time. Canada, Japan and Mexico are already pressing to do so. Powerful corporate interests are pushing for the TPP to:
Offshore good-paying jobs to low-wage nations and undercut working conditions globally
Create new tools for attacking environmental and consumer safety standards
Expand the deregulation of banks, hedge funds and insurance companies
Further concentrate global food supplies, displacing family farmers and subjecting consumers to wild price fluctuations
Institute longer patents that restrict access to affordable, generic medications
Impose IP restrictions that choke online speech, innovation, privacy and digital rights
Instead of being debated out in the open, the TPP has thus far been negotiated in the shadows. Approximately 600 corporate lobbyists have been given access to the TPP negotiating texts. A handful of civil society groups also have access to the texts, but they are vastly outnumbered and are legally prevented from sharing what they’ve read. Meanwhile, the people whose lives will be affected by the TPP have been barred from even reviewing what U.S. negotiators have proposed in our names.
The thirteenth major round of TPP negotiations — and perhaps one of the last — is taking place in San Diego from July 2 to 10. There will be a variety of actions in San Diego at that time — but people of conscience throughout the country are needed to help ensure that the world isn’t saddled with another back-room trade deal that benefits the 1% at the expense of the global majority.

Shut Down San Onofre

- On April 18th, Southern California Edison (SEC) admitted that Unit 2 had the same unusual wear as Unit 3 (the one the blew a tube) meaning it will be very difficult to turn on Unit 3 before understanding the problem, as had been suggested as one option by NRC Secretary Gregory Jaczko at the press conference.
- Regarding the press conference -- 20/20 hindsight says our action would have been better not at the San Onofre plant, but in the street outside the Doubletree Hotel where Chairman Jaczko already had all the media, and people could easily see, park, etc.
- New Facebook page: http://www.Facebook.com/ShutSongs <-- Please like it!
- Cities of Irvine and Solana Beach voted to shut down San Onofre. This needs to be on the agenda of all local cities.

- Unfortunately for the over 7,000,000,000 "stakeholders" affected by TPP, the meat of the negotiations will occur behind closed doors, which mirrors the manner in which the corporations which aim to benefit the most from the negotiations do their business every day. It's what they know; it's what keeps them unaccountable to the rest of society. These 7,000,000,000 "stakeholders" world-wide will be affected by these negotiations, environmentally, economically, agriculturally, and politically. But negotiators will be beholden to the 1%; thus it will be to their benefit to make the most of this by rolling back workers rights, Internet freedom, environmental regulations, financial safeguards, limits to pharmaceutical patents, and the list goes on. Hundreds of corporate lobbyists will enjoy the advantage of having access to the negotiating documents that will simply not be available to the public. Recently a memorandum of understanding signed by parties which banned the release of the documents for four years after the agreement is reached was leaked.

Supreme Court Declines to Revisit Citizens United - In a brief unsigned decision, the Supreme Court on Monday declined to have another look at its blockbuster 2010 campaign finance decision, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. In a 5-to-4 vote, the majority summarily reversed a decision of the Montana Supreme Court that had refused to follow the Citizens United decision.
America: A Fire Sale to Foreign Corporations by Brian Moench 26 of the 28 chapters of [TPP] have nothing to do with trade. TPP was drafted with the oversight of 600 representatives of multi-national corporations, who essentially gave themselves whatever they wanted; the environment, public health, worker safety, further domestic job losses be damned.

TAKE ACTION
Things YOU can do right now to help.
From Barb Dunsmore:
I was working at RSF [Rancho Santa Fe] Farmer's Market today [Sunday, June 17th] and this band, The Yes Team, was playing. Really beautiful voices and nice music. I got the sense that they supported Occupy so I went up and talked to them. They played this Occupy song for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swxTULI9-J8 Recorded on my phone so recording doesn't really do them justice, but they are really good. I asked them if they would ever be interested in playing for an Occupy fundraiser in the future and they all said an astounding YES! So please keep them in mind for any future events or fundraisers.
Here is their website: http://www.yesteamgo.com where you can see list of their scheduled events. They will be playing at The Wave House this Friday June 22nd and will be playing at Ocean Beach Street Fair next Saturday June 23rd so stop by and check them out if you have time.

POLICE COMPLAINTS
- OSD speaks at the Citizens Review Board of Police Practices on 1/24
Have you been mistreated by the Police? Have your First Amendment rights been violated? Have you been arrested for nothing, only to have the charges "unfiled" but held over your head for up to a year?
- First read this document: http://www.2momslaw.com/police_misconduct.pdf
- Make a Complaint: How to Make a Police Complaint
- Use this form: Complaint Form
- Forms also available in the lobby of City Hall.
- Citizen's Review Board member says we do NOT need names & badge numbers. File the complaint & it's up to SDPD to determine who the officer was (But it is better if we have them, of course).
- ALSO: By telephone or in writing to
- SDPD Internal Affairs Unit, 1401 Broadway, MS 709, San Diego CA 92101, (619) 531-2801
- Complaints made to the Citizens Review Board do not necessarily make it into the officers' personnel files
- Read this: Making Police Complaints That Stick
- Also, consider making a CLAIM against the city for your BOND money if charges were never filed. They have 45 days to reject the claim, then you file a lawsuit. It costs $400 to file unless you can claim low income.
- TELL POLICE HOW THEY ARE DOING: Police host monthly meetings in the community to get feedback from community members.

I also refuse to consent to any search of these premises or any other premises under my control, or in which I have a possessory, proprietary, or privacy interest, including my car, my body, or effects. - To check if someone is in jail check this website: http://apps.sdsheriff.net/wij/wij.aspx
- It usually takes about 6 hours for someone who has been arrested to pop up here. This site will tell you their charges, bail, etc. Jail's number is (619) 615-2700. The jail won't tell you much if anything that is not on the website. Please check this website before saying someone is in or out of jail to avoid confusion.
- FYI -- Penal Code 849.5. In any case in which a person is arrested and released and no accusatory pleading is filed charging him with an offense, any record of arrest of the person shall include a record of release. Thereafter, the arrest shall not be deemed an arrest, but a detention only.
