  • Board meeting on Sept 15 was a packed house, the public hearing the apology of the board, and at the same time, a slap to the members of the public who did not like their vote to ban the live speech by President Obama. Many people left before the ridiculous #2 agenda item after an extra-long break to purge all but the most hearty souls from the room. That item basically negated any "apology" by slapping at Paul Schnaubelt, a member of the public who made comments about "killing the king", an expression used frequently in chess circles to mean win the game.
  • Talked with Superintendent Brian Marshall about the question regarding whether it was appropriate to approve the resolution by Winet to protect board members using all legal means from threats (in response to reading an email by Paul Schnaubelt regarding "Killing the King", an Emerson quotation.)

Timeline

  • 07 Sep 2009 - Special Board meeting on Labor Day, the five-member board voted to prevent teachers from showing the speech in the district's 21 schools the day it aired. Instead, the speech was recorded for later viewing. Trustees Emma Turner and Bill Baber opposed the motion. Halgren crafted it after several others failed, including one to ban the speech entirely.
  • 15 Sep 2009 - Board meeting, the board apologizes for postponing the speech by President Obama and in the same meeting, passing a resolution against their opponents, esp. PaulSchnaubelt, President of the La Mesa Spring Valley Teachers Association.
