EL CAJON – A former El Cajon councilman was arraigned Friday on charges of grand theft and financial abuse of his elderly mother, officials said.

Charles Santos, 46, pleaded not guilty at his arraigned in El Cajon's Superior Court on six felony counts that include elder financial abuse, grand theft and forgery.

He was notified to appear in court by letter, said Paul Levikow, District Attorney spokesman. A judge released Santos on his promise to return to court.

Santos, who served on El Cajon's city council for six years, lost his seat in 2004. He ran for El Cajon mayor in 2006 and was not elected.

District Attorney officials said he lived at home with his 88-year-old mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Santos is scheduled to appear in court again Dec. 7 for a readiness conference hearing. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 4.
