- This coming Tuesday is the first City Council meeting of the year. Public comment is held after 10am and usually completed before noon.
- Arraignment of Ray Lutz is scheduled for 8am, Jan 10 (Tuesday). I understand that actually means 10am. This high-profile arrest is one we should have maximal involvement of OSD because the media will likely continue to follow it. Everyone is welcome to attend if you can! Usually Dept. 3 (just to the right of the entrance) at the County Courthouse, 202 W. Broadway. As usual with all court appearances, best attire is recommended.
- Rally is scheduled outside the courthouse for 9am in support of our right to use Freedom Plaza for peaceful political activities, including voter registration.
- We expect that they will not file charges because there is an explicit exemption in the trespassing law for "peaceful political activities."
- The civil case against the operators of the Civic Center Plaza office building, CBRE, Inc. and others is separate from this criminal case. Status is it has been filed but defendants have not yet been served.
- Police Community Feedback meeting at 7:30am on Wednesday.
- Very Important -- The ballot proposition to revise the encroachment law (SDMC 54.0110) will be on the agenda on Wednesday, Jan 11 (9a) at the City Council Conference room (Floor 12) of City Hall. Since it will be ON THE AGENDA, that means everyone who was arrested, cited or detained for "Encroachment" under SDMC 54.0110 should come to this meeting and SPEAK.
- Mayoral "State of the City" address Wednesday (Jan 11) at Balboa Theater, reception following at U.S. Grant Hotel. This information needs to be confirmed, with more details to follow if any actions are approved by OSD at our GA.
- Occupy Walk will be having it’s first planning and discussion meeting this Wednesday at 7:00pm. We will be meeting at the hART Lounge located at 734 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101. They belong to the Wig Store and are available during closed hours.
- Jan 14 - Occupy So Cal Meetup in Long Beach at their MLK parade. -- this event is being held by Occupy Long Beach and discussed in a recent conference call to coordinate Socal Occupies. To folks in the greater LA area, "Socal" usually does not include San Diego. Not approved for formal participation by OSD by our GA but included here for information only.
- OSD Contingent in D.C. on Jan 17. (Bus leaves Jan 13 and returns Jan 25.)

I'm having a very hard time digesting the news that my fellow Occupier SDer and friend, Jay Polk, has lost his life in military service in the Middle East. I keep hoping we will hear that it is not so. The first stage of grief. I will always remember his smile and dedication to keeping Occupiers safe and well. And the big hug he gave me the last time he was in Freedom Plaza Civic Center before he left to do his duty, AGAIN. Rest in Peace, dearest Jay.
William Gagan
A fellow revolutionary, activist, visionary, occupier, and friend was killed in the line of duty overseas in Syria after leaving Occupy San Diego a short while ago to go serve a country he loves, but a government he hates. Jay Polk, rest in peace. We love you and will honor your memory. Reason #99 why I occupy.. I do it for people who have come before, and who still will in the future. If we don't stand up for what's right now, we are dooming the future of our children, nieces & nephews, and grandchildren.
Kayla Occupysandiego Anna Ward
Jay, you are a brother of mine from another family. I weep and I can never forget you, your service and your shining smiling face. I will do all I can to make sure that Julie and children are helped and that your memory never fades. Here is too you a fellow soldier and someone special. Airborne All the WAY Hooooo AAAH!
Saharai Baby Lungs Salazar
You truly were an incredible human being who embodied the spirit of selfless love and giving. Your spirit will live on forever through your actions and your words. Your Occupy Family loves and misses you. Until we meet again my friend.
Irene Flynn
Thank you, Jay, for the greatest sacrifice of all.
Hollyhawk Cambia
Rest in Peace, chef Jay Polk, who died this morning a week after deployment with the U.S. Army. You were an amazing spirit and a wonderful addition to my family, someone who truly honored and served the spirit of freedom and equality. I will never forget your humor, your generosity or your food... all my love and from everyone at Occupy San Diego, thank you. May your energy flow with the eternal universe.
Janessa Jones
I love you Jay. You are the most genuine honest, loyal, giving person I've known. You don't deserve for your time to be cut short. You are in my heart, & will forever be in my mind. Sending love & healing lihgt to your family.
I love you Freind.

R.I.P. Jay Polk, our resident Occupy chef and American Hero lost his life in service to his country overseas in the U.S. Army Special Operations Command this morning. My heart goes out to his family and kids and everyone that was touched by his amazing service to his community.
Mitchell Sterling
I have learned very sad news today. A friend of mine, and all here at Occupy San Diego, has lost his life while serving his country in the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Most of us knew Jay as "chef" of the Occupy San Diego kitchen and food operation. We just recently sent our good wishes and goodbyes as he prepared to ship out. Only last month a lovely surprise baby shower was held at Occupy San Diego, on the Plaza, for Julie. My heart goes out to Julie, and all their family. This news is so very sad and devastating to all who knew Jay. My thoughts and prayers are with Julie and all Jay's family!
R.I.P Jay Polk.
Ray Lutz
I had several conversations with Jay, esp. just before the first raid when the food area was still in full swing. He was fearless, understood the cause, and worked his butt off. He was ready to get arrested. Hearing that he has given his life for our country only increases my resolve to see this through. I hope it does the same to you. Jay, I was happy to have had the opportunity to meet you, and felt your life force in your strong handshake. Tears are clouding my vision.
Hilary Lankford
This is utterly shocking... What a tragedy. One of THE nicest nicest comrades at Occupy. What a loss to the movement. This is what US imperialism driven by capitalism fueled by hate and division does to REAL people. When I think about the Middle East it seems so far away, almost abstract at times. It's tragic events like this that bring reality into focus. I just saw Jay at the Egypt Solidarity Rally a week and half ago. I hadn't seen him in a while and he said, "Hey, my little artist, I thought I would never see you again."... and that was the last time I ever saw him.
Cecile Veillard
i don't remember meeting Jay when he was working in the kitchen, but i think i DO remember seeing him at GA's. what i will say is that, strange as it is, i'm glad i got to hear the news (over the phone today) directly from someone who knew and cared about Jay personally (Hollyhawk). this is the insanity of capitalism: someone who had discovered that the REAL war was at home has died fighting a war abroad that he had lost any belief in. so, so sad.
Nan Di Giovanni
Fly, fly little wing
Fly beyond imagining
The softest cloud, the whitest dove
Upon the wind of heaven's love
Past the planets and the stars
Leave this lonely world of ours
Escape the sorrow and the pain
And fly again
Julie Kramer
Let's plan on meeting up after the memorial and brainstorming ways we can come together at a community to help his family. I think my contact at 4th & B can help us put together a benefit concert. I'm going to contact him tomorrow.

- Oh, the Irony! Bank of America Plaza in Atlanta Faces Foreclosure Atlanta’s Bank of America Plaza is one of the 10 tallest structures in the U.S. And thanks to troubles at its namesake Bank of America Corp. (BAC) and other one-time tenants, the skyscraper could be one of the tallest foreclosure tales of the financial crisis as it struggles to meet its debt service and offices remain empty.
- Investigate Wall Street Bank Fraud The greed and fraud of Wall Street banks caused the loss of millions of homes and billions of dollars in the housing crash. Now we need President Obama to take a strong stance for homeowners, and for accountability, by opening a federal investigation into big bank fraud.
