NEWS

First night at Children's Park, Oct 7, 2011

M11_San_Onofre_Flier-1up-fmclip.png Details: M11 San Onofre Protest And Rally

OSD Forks
  • There are two groups meeting which are forks from the original OSD.
  • Freedom Plaza had a good turnout at the recent GA on Saturday, 47 people, a bit increase from last weeks 8-10 people.
  • Childrens Park has had a consistently larger group of about 40 people or more.
  • This email blast does not play favorites and will try to provide information on both forks, and other non OSD events too.
  • Please check meeting locations carefully as previous information may be incorrect.

Occupy Walk I went with Stephen Frank G out to Pauma valley to see the walkers yesterday, at Susan's wonderful home. They took off this morning from the 76 & 15 and easily made it to Temecula this afternoon where Sharon and her husband picked them up to host the walkers at their house. Next big stop: Hemet. We are in need of a host family in Hemet.

San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS)
  • NEW OSD endorsed!
  • Press Release on M11 San Onofre Protest sent to media and all lists Monday.
  • Contacted by KPFA -- They want to run our livestream along with many other protests happening on March 11 regarding the Fukushima disaster.
  • NEW Women from Fukushima have been confirmed for this event. This will make it extremely newsworthy -- you don't get visitors from Japan to tell their story very often.
  • Have ordered more flyers and 100 posters. Will need help distributing these to coffee shops, college campuses, gathering places, etc.

Legal Hearings, etc.
  • Adriane says: Curtis Williams, aka Hex, is facing trial starting Monday, February 27, and trial is expected to last until Wednesday or Thursday. Hex was arrested during the Port Shutdown protest for crossing the street and faces a misdemeanor charge of Penal Code 148, resisting arrest or delaying/obstructing a peace officer. Hex wants the support of his fellow occupiers and media attention on his trial. This is sure to be an exciting show; Hex's attorney will be exposing police lies and presenting evidence of innocence, including exonerating video of the arrest and eyewitness testimony of fellow occupiers. Please, if even for only an hour this week, come occupy the court in support of a committed member of this movement, and stand against the continuous civil rights violations of San Diego law enforcement and the City Attorney's persecution of an innocent man.

Trial call is at 9 a.m. in Dept. 2, where the case will be sent out to a trial department. Jury selection will likely start all morning (no room for the public while the jury panel is in the courtroom). Opening statements by both attorneys will likely start in the afternoon session, which starts at 1:30pm. When you get to court, ask the bailiff in Dept. 2 where the Williams case (with attorney Laura Sheppard) was sent, or check the Facebook event for updates and to RSVP. The downtown criminal courthouse is located at 220 W. Broadway.
  • Benjamin Gasper's trial has been postponed to allow the defense to respond to new evidence brought forth by the prosecution. The newest court date is March 19th at 9:30 in department 50.
  • Mayor to get new contract-making power: See the article, a small paragraph near the bottom. City council voting this week to give Sanders more contract making power. What about the next mayor? Anybody want a new stadium (or a new stadium sign)? Article
    • Makes you wonder if this is the way the City Council holds the Mayor's feet to the fire. Don't question his authority and the fact that he violated the law, just grant more power and leave them out of it, that must be what they are thinking.
    • It also means developers get their way with little or no citizen review. We must stand against these changes!

Media

2012 Feb 27

Media: Occupy San Diego

  • SUPPORT ACTION for Brother Hexagon TheGreen -- Jury Trial!Monday at 13:30 until Wednesday at 17:00. San Diego County Courthouse 220 W. Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101 ****Occupy San Diego's activist, Brother Hex, is being put on trial for arrest taking place at the Close the Ports Demonstration we held in San Diego.

Media: Occupy National and Global

  • How Occupy helped labor win on the West Coast Earlier this month longshore workers in Washington state reached a contract with a boss that has spent the past year fighting to keep their union out. That company, the multinational EGT, sought to run its new grain terminal in the town of Longview, as the only facility on the West Coast without the famously militant International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). A victory by EGT would have emboldened employers up and down the coast to seek to free themselves of ILWU influence. And if the union — with the help of the Occupy movement — had not defied the law, EGT would have succeeded.

  • Obama Campaign To Wall Street: We'll Go Easy On You Guys President Obama's campaign manager has a message for Wall Street: This time around, we'll lay off. Jim Messina, Obama's campaign manager, told the hosts of a $38,500 per-plate fundraiser geared towards investment bankers and hedge fund managers that the president wouldn't make Wall Street look bad during his re-election campaign, Bloomberg reports. The assurance follows Obama's call to raise taxes on the rich in his latest budget proposal.

  • Philadelphia Convention Plans Lead To Rift In Occupy Movement In early November, Nathan Kleinman, an Occupy protester in Philadelphia, received an email from someone named Michael Pollok who said he was part of a group of protesters affiliated with the Occupy movement. Pollok said the group planned to hold a convention in Philadelphia during the week of July 4, when 876 delegates from congressional districts around the country would draft "a petition for a redress of grievances" to be presented to Congress.
Kleinman didn't like the idea, and he didn't think it would go over well with other people at Occupy Philly either. He had a few specific concerns, chief among them the fact that the event involved a representative model of government, as opposed to the consensus model that has characterized the Occupy movement from the beginning.

  • Citizens United Revisited? Buckle Up, Chief Justice Roberts On Friday night, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the Montana Supreme Court's December, 2011 decision upholding the state's century-old ban on corporate political spending. The implications of this are huge, as it paves the way for a potential re-opening of the disastrous Citizens United decision that has spawned billionaire-sponsored super PACs. And if that happens, Chief Justice John Roberts better buckle up for a grassroots mobilization unlike any the court has seen in years.

  • Secondary Sources: Breaking Up Banks, Inequality and Mobility, Fed Yucks. Sheila Bair says it’s time to break up the too big to fail banks. “Yet with gridlock in Washington, don’t count on politicians for a solution. Shareholders, however, have an interest in demanding that big banks split apart. Comparing the valuation for the supersize banks (Citigroup (C), Bank of America (BAC), and J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM)) with their simpler, leaner competitors isn’t pretty.

  • What if Occupy Created a Movement so Big it Couldn't Control it? Occupy Wall Street is going on a press offensive to correct a round of stories on Wednesday that reported it was planning a national assembly for the summer, the latest example of the decentralized movement seeing its name used in ways its organizers don't support.

  • Bruce Bartlett on Where the Right Went Wrong In this Moyers & Company segment, Bill Moyers talks with conservative economist Bruce Bartlett, who wrote “the bible” for the Reagan Revolution, worked on domestic policy for the Reagan White House, and served as a top treasury official under the first President Bush. Now he’s a heretic in the conservative circles where he once was a star.

  • White House refuses to reveal ties with Monsanto Despite requests made under the Freedom of Information Act for correspondence out of the White House, the Obama administration is refusing to comply with calls to disclose discussions with Monsanto-linked lobbyists.

Damian Tryon says
Just got news that Shahrokh's brother passed away from a heart attack. Shahrokh has been with Occupy SD from before the start. And even though he doesn't have Facebook he really does exist. He could use condolences and support today from those that know him. Sounds like he'll be heading up to San Jose soon though plans are up in the air. Spinach Williams, Cynthia Tecson and I just met his twin brother and mother in San Jose just a few weeks ago.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

See All Occupy San Diego Announcements to read all previous announcements about
  • Where we meet, how to recover confiscated property from the San Diego Police Department, information for people were arrested, etc.

POLICE COMPLAINTS

Have you been mistreated by the Police? Have your First Amendment rights been violated? Have you been arrested for nothing, only to have the charges "unfiled" but held over your head for up to a year?
  • NEW First read this document: http://www.2momslaw.com/police_misconduct.pdf
  • Make a Complaint: How to Make a Police Complaint
    • Use this form: Complaint Form
    • Forms also available in the lobby of City Hall.
    • Citizen's Review Board member says we do NOT need names & badge numbers. File the complaint & it's up to SDPD to determine who the officer was (But it is better if we have them, of course).
  • ALSO: By telephone or in writing to
    • SDPD Internal Affairs Unit, 1401 Broadway, MS 709, San Diego CA 92101, (619) 531-2801
    • Complaints made to the Citizens Review Board do not necessarily make it into the officers' personnel files
    • Read this: Making Police Compliants That Stick
  • Also, consider making a CLAIM against the city for your BOND money if charges were never filed. They have 45 days to reject the claim, then you file a lawsuit. It costs $400 to file unless you can claim low income.

Call for Witnesses:
Two occupiers are facing trial for criminal charges stemming from arrests at the Port Shut-down on December 12. Attorneys for Curtis Williams (aka Hex) and Bobby Uribe are looking for defense witnesses to dispute officer testimony and any photo or video footage of the arrests. If you witnessed Curtis's arrest, please contact attorney Laura Sheppard at lrsheppardlaw@gmail.com. If you witnessed Bobby's arrest, please contact attorney Adriane Bracciale at criminalandtrafficdefense@gmail.com.

  • Making Police Compliants That Stick -- Important info from Adriane of NLG
  • Anyone with information about arrests... Please, we need to continue to compile a complete list.
    • IF YOU HAVE BEEN ARRESTED, DETAINED, OR CITED... Please complete the form here: Occupy Legal Info Request and email to raylutz@citizensoversight.org.
    • If you can help compile the database from incoming emails, please let me know. It just takes a person who can carefully enter the data in to a web-based form.
  • Arrests At Balboa Theater 2012 Jan 11 -- This topic created to track arrests and progress fighting felony arrests at BalboaTheater
  • UPDATED Two items relevant to OSD mission were placed on the agenda of the City of San Diego Rules Committee. This committee is yet another example of a "do-nothing" committee because they hardly even treated the proposals as serious.

  • NEW TELL POLICE HOW THEY ARE DOING: Police host monthly meetings in the community to get feedback from community members.

  • Legal is asking: If you were at the South gate on the day of The Port Shut Down 12/12 and witnessed any of the arrests and are willing to testify...please contact HiAndrea on FB or haz_el_eyes@yahoo.com -- Tammy.
